The North-West Canada Medal was sanctioned immediately after the conclusion of operations against the Métis led by Louis Riel.
It was mainly issued un-named, with or without the Clasp for Saskatchewan where the bulk of the action took place.
Of particular interest to collectors, are the medals issued to officers and men aboard the steamship Northcote involved in the boat action; exceptionally their medals where officially impressed with the recipients name, other medals have been encountered with un-official naming.
The medal was issued to sixteen British staff officers but the majority of medals (5600 I all) went to local forces
